A. R. Rahman - Talent Tujhe Salaam
Sanatan Sangeet Sanskriti presents Sanantan
Sangeet Puraskar to Shri A. R. Rahman for his
outstanding contribution to music. He was born in an affluent
family to Shri K.A. Sekar, who was a renowned musician,
arranger and conductor in Malayalam movies. With such a rich
legacy of music in his family, Rahman began learning the piano
at the age of four. But as fate would have it, the young boy
lost his father at a tender age of nine. His skills were honed
at Trinity College of Music, Oxford University.
It all began in 1991 when the prodigal son of music was born.
Mani Ratnam, a renowned movie director was in search of a music
composer for his new film. He met Rahman at an awards function,
which was organized for honoring the best in the field of
advertising. Rahman bagged the award for the best ad jingle.
Mani Ratnam was so impressed by this young talent that he signed
Rahman for his next film titled Roja, six months later. The
entire world listened in awe to the great musician at work. It
was probably the first time that Hindi film music witnessed the
harmonious fusion of Indian classical music, pop, reggae, and
rock, Beethoven, Bach and Mozart.
As an ingenious music composer, he has to his credit several
award winning jingles for Radio and Television spots. He has
received recognition as music composer for full-length feature
films and has already left an indelible mark in the world of
music. Profound knowledge in the related fields of sound
engineering, sound design and production gives him a distinct
advantage over his peers.
His exemplary proficiency in music composition is represented
by his ability to work with maestros like Dr. L.Shankar and
Ustad Zakir Hussain with ease.
He has been conferred with numerous awards such as Telegu
Academy Puraskar, Film Fare, Rajiv Gandhi Award and Negi Reddy
Award for his distinctive contribution to music. Other awards
include the R. D. Burman Award at the SuMu Music Awards (1993),
Padmashri (2000) and the prestigious Lata Mangeshkar Award
(2005).
Smt. Sonal Mansingh - Dance of Success
Sanatan Sangeet Sanskriti presented Sanatan
Nritya Samman to Padma Bhushan Smt. Sonal Mansingh in
recognition of her invaluable contribution to Indian Classical
Dance. Sonal Mansingh is the youngest recipient of the Padma
Bhushan awarded by the President of India in 1992. Smt. Sonal
Mansingh is an ardent exponent of Bharatanatyam and Odissi dance
forms, the epitome of our cultural heritage. These dance forms,
practiced in the sanctuary of temples, are an unremitting
journey of discovery and transformation. Smt. Sonal Mansingh
honed her outstanding performing skills under the aegis of Guru
Kelucharan Mohapatra and Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam.
A widely traveled artist, she has enthralled audiences around
the globe. Apart from performing, she has choreographed numerous
plays and poems from contemporary themes, offering an insight
into an artiste's interpretative mind.
She has been awarded the distinction of giving recitals at
important festivals such as Ganesh Festival, Pune; Mahabalipuram
Festival, Madras; Khajuraho Festival etc.
Sonal Mansingh is one of the leading exponents of Odissi, an
ancient, classical dance form of Orissa. For her opinions and
interpretations, she has been called a philosopher among
dancers. Apart from being a dancer, she is a known social
activist, thinker, researcher, orator, choreographer and
teacher.
As someone who is proficient in Sanskrit and German, Sonal
firmly believes that dancers must have love for literature,
poetry, the languages, sculpture and painting. Dance, as she
puts it, is "a rare confluence of all these arts." In
1977, she founded the Center for Indian Classical Dances (CICD)
in Delhi, which has produced many noteworthy stage shows and
trained umpteen numbers of students. More recently, she has been
appointed a trustee of the Indira Gandhi National Center for the
Arts (IGNCA), the largest institution in India. Her long list of
accomplishments includes the Indira Priyadarshini Award (1994),
Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award (1991), Nrityakala Kaumudi (1986)
and Natya Kala Ratna (1985) and many others.
Sonal Mansingh was felicitated on 1st May 2002 at India Habitat
Center, New Delhi, on her 59th birthday as well as completing 40
